Sifted

I watched her turn the handle on the old sifter as I had many times before.

My wife is a young woman who cooks the old way. And yes, she still sifts flour. “Cake won’t turn out right if you don’t,” she says. Some cooks have given up sifting since lumpy flour and extra protein (bugs) aren’t normally issues anymore. Sifting is painless for the flour but tiring for the one cranking the handle.

Staying The Course

The white blazes disappeared, but we stayed the course.

The Foothills Trail of South Carolina is marked with white blazes. My daughter and I were on the most remote section, following our guide book and looking for landmarks assuring us we were walking the right way. Most importantly, we looked for blazes.

The Bitterness Root

Crows know. Perhaps by instinct, eyesight or a combination of both, but they know.

I enjoy watching a variety of birds frequent our feeders and bird bath. In spite of the numerous other places to find water, they love to bathe, drink and socialize at the bird bath.

Life’s Unstable Moments

I've never liked them and have only rode a couple and then only because someone I loved encouraged me.

With names like Thunder Road, Mindbender, Avalanche Run and Afterburn, roller coasters frighten me. In fact almost all rides at fairs and amusement parks send my stomach reeling and for that reason I've made a lifetime habit of avoiding most of them; roller coasters particularly. Sudden starts and deep drops, turning upside down and fast speeds make me uneasy.

When Life Is Unfair

Matthew 14:24 But the boat was already a considerable distance from land, buffeted by the waves because the wind was against it. (NIV)

If I was where God wanted me, why were things going south? Isn’t smooth sailing a sign of God’s blessings?

When God Gives A Thorn

II Corinthians 12:7 To keep me from becoming conceited because of these surpassingly great revelations, there was given me a thorn in my flesh, a messenger of Satan, to torment me. (NIV)

It appeared on the side of my heel the first day. We couldn’t turn back but going forward would intensify the pain.

When Disaster Strikes

Matthew 14:6-12
(excerpt from Morning Meditations by Martin Wiles)
Matthew 14:10 Herod had John beheaded in the prison. (NIV)
