God (III)

Impenetrable Fortress-

Experiencing God Through Forgiveness

The hurt cut deep. After all it was his nephew.

Emmanuel* was on the wrong road. Though raised in a Christian family, he decided to take a detour down a dead end road. Drugs cost him a place to stay when his parents discovered he was using at home. His uncle seemed his only hope, but he quickly messed that up too. While they were away, he stole a priceless family heirloom and a gun and hocked them both for drug money. Uncle Jamie* discovered the missing shotgun which started a search to see if other items were missing. And they were.

The Power Of Forgiveness

Johnny* built a fence, but not for penning animals.

Johnny’s fence was straight and didn’t enclose anything. It had no corners but coursed a straight line between his and his brother’s house. Anger over a perceived wrong built it, and unforgiveness staked the posts securely in the ground. When their mom died, his brother Red* paid for the family home and land, but Johnny thought he inherited it unfairly, overlooking him and the other siblings. To vent his unforgiveness, he built a fence and barely spoke to his brother.

Accepted Not Rejected

Rejection for any reason hurts.

Tech devices hadn’t made the scene, so we played Hide n Seek, cops and robbers, cowboys and Indians, dodge ball, football and baseball (in our yards), and put sheets over chairs for tents. Innocent activities keeping us active.

Stuffing Our Stuff

I was amazed the first time I saw it. I imagined I never would, but I did.

My brother and I had recently started backcountry camping. Our first trip found us with cheap sleeping bags that delivered only shivers. So we visited a reputable camping catalogue and upgraded.

Childlike Faith

She walked into the room and said, “Dad, I just asked Jesus into my heart,” then turned and left.

I was excited and confused. Excited about her decision but confused over how she came to such a conclusion. She had heard me preach about it and teachers teach it. She had watched me model the life of a Jesus follower, but I had never talked to her. She was only a child-too young to make that decision.

Canceled Debts

She listened closely to the Sunday School teacher’s opinion about what she had done. He didn’t know there was someone present who fit his bill of implications, and she wasn’t sure she agreed.

No Fear

They ambled slowly across the defunct course, munching on turf previously hosted by cadies and golfers.

Elk are native to the area, so their presence wasn’t a surprise. But seeing them in the middle of Estes Park-a town near the vastly popular Rocky Mountain National Park, seemed odd.

Position Change

Galatians 4:7 So you are no longer a slave, but a son; and since you are a son, God has made you also an heir. (NIV)

It wasn’t where I wanted to be, but it also wasn’t where I would shortly find myself.

Dealing With Guilt

(excerpt from Morning Meditations by Martin Wiles)

Romans 8:1 So now there is no condemnation for those who belong to Christ Jesus. (NLT)

There have been many occasions when I should have felt guilty. My teenage years being one. I did about everything Mom and Dad told me not to. I knew their instructions parroted God’s so my actions created internal conflict and resulted in guilt. But for the most part, I ignored it.
