Position Change
Galatians 4:7 So you are no longer a slave, but a son; and since you are a son, God has made you also an heir. (NIV)
It wasn’t where I wanted to be, but it also wasn’t where I would shortly find myself.
I had recently moved and was in need of work. Having previously worked in jobs that allowed me to be or see outside-and having recently spent six months employed with a textile mill, I wasn’t interested in returning to the prison. But the town I moved to was largely consumed by the textile industry.
After a valiant attempt to find employment elsewhere, I finally succumbed and applied to my arch nemesis. I was hired as a weaver and placed in noisy, cramped and dusty quarters. Misery followed. Sign language was necessary for communication. Lint covered everything including my food and coffee. And there were no windows.
So I prayed for deliverance, and God brought it; just not in the way I imagined. Freedom came though getting laid off. I was soon called back but not for the same position. The job available was the lowest paying in the plant-a sweeper. But at least I escaped the noise and could walk outside. After a few months of sweeping, I changed positions again and was promoted to Cloth Room supervisor.
There are normally quite a few position changes in our working years’ journey, but the most important one has nothing to do with employment but rather a relationship. Paul maintains those who have accepted God’s forgiveness of their sins through faith in Jesus Christ have changed positions. Once slaves, now sons and daughters. Once without inheritance, now joint heirs with Christ.
To be positioned as a child of the living God is a wonderful experience. We live knowing our sins are forgiven. No longer do we cower in fear of God’s condemnation. Our position change fosters a new appreciation for life and gives us the desire to love God with our entire being and serve him with all our effort. Let your position change create a new attitude in you about life. Live with confidence instead of defeat and optimism instead of negativity.
Prayer: Our Lord and God, we thank You for exchanging Your life for ours.
